A Not So Smart Hiding Spot

Sarah starts to laugh and says “I feel like I’m watching an episode of Celebrities Are People Too”.

I’m sitting on the floor of my dining room scouring my buffet for unexpected places I might have stashed my outdoor fairy lights.

When I moved to Santa Fe earlier this year, I left my outdoor fairy lights on the counter in my laundry room as a reminder to hang them up. Somewhere in the last 6 months, I decided I wasn’t going to hang them yet… it just wasn’t a priority.

So I put them somewhere really smart. So smart, in fact, that I can’t find them ANYWHERE.

I’ve looked everywhere I can think… three times at least. And I still can’t find them. No freaking clue.

Sarah even looked around the house. She couldn’t find them either.

If the past is any indication of the future, I’m sure I’ll find them when I’m packing up to move out.

I wanted to share this with you because it’s important to remember that mountains of clutter aren’t necessarily the reason you can’t find things. You don’t actually have to be drowning in stuff to lose things.

It can happen to anyone. Even minimalist organizers who have everything in their home boxed and labeled.

I know clutter may not be helping, but it may not be the culprit either.

It’s easy to rush to blame and beat ourselves up. But the truth is, that sometimes this just happens. I wish it didn’t, but sometimes it does.

And beating ourselves up doesn’t help.

I like to think that when this happens, it’s the Universe redirecting me to something better. A new solution, or way of doing things. Something that I didn’t think of at first.

Almost every time I can’t find something, I eventually find an equal (or better) alternative around my house, if I give myself a chance.

So, if you struggle with losing things in plain sight, this is your sign to cut yourself some slack.

Sometimes this just happens. It isn’t a reflection on you, your ability to organize, or the future of your life and home.

Be gentle on my friend, you’re doing your best.
