Why Getting Organized Feels So Hard (and the 10 Steps that actually help)

Why Getting Organized Feels Harder Than It Should

One thing I see again and again when I work with people is this quiet frustration:

“I want to be organized. So why does this still feel so hard?”

Most people assume it’s a motivation issue. Or a discipline issue. Or that they just haven’t found the right trick yet.

But in reality, there’s a much simpler reason.

Most people were never actually taught how to get organized.

They were told to clean up.
They were told to get rid of things.
They were told to “just deal with it.”

But very few people were taught a process.

So when organizing feels overwhelming, emotional, or hard to sustain, it’s often not about effort at all. It’s about not having a clear framework to work from.

What Happens Without a Framework

Without steps, organizing usually goes like this:

  • You decide it’s time.
  • You pick a big project.
  • You dive in.

And then you hit decision fatigue. Or you get stuck halfway through. Or you end up with a space that looks better for a minute…but doesn’t stay that way.

That’s not because organizing is inherently hard. It’s because you’re trying to solve a complex problem without a map.

I talk more about this in this short video—why organizing tends to fall apart, even when the intention is strong, and what you can do instead:

What Actually Changes Things

Over the years, I’ve found that organizing becomes so much more manageable when you have:

  • A clear starting point
  • A sequence to follow
  • And a way to make decisions without second-guessing everything

When those are in place, the work gets lighter. Not instant. Not perfect. But clearer.

That’s why I created the 10 Steps to Finally Get (& Stay) Organized.

It’s a simple, repeatable framework you can use for any space in your home. Instead of guessing what to do next, you always know where you are in the process—and what step comes next.

People often tell me the biggest shift isn’t just their space looking better. It’s the feeling of having their footing again. Of knowing how to move forward without spinning.

This Isn’t About Doing More.

Getting organized isn’t about tackling everything at once.

It’s about having a way to approach the work that makes sense—so when you do have time or energy, you know how to use it.

If you’ve been circling the same organizing projects for a while, this might be the missing piece.

Sometimes the problem isn’t that you haven’t tried hard enough.

It’s that no one ever handed you the steps.
