What Your Room of Doom Might Be Trying to Tell You

In our recent Chaos to Calm class, one of our members, Tricia (names changed to protect the amazingly courageous), did something extraordinary.

We were exploring our “Rooms of Doom” …those spaces that feel so heavy, messy, or intimidating that even thinking about them can make you want to take a nap.

But instead of rushing to fix or judge the clutter, we did something different.

We sensed into it.

I asked everyone to close their eyes and imagine:

  • Where is your Room of Doom?
  • What color would it be?
  • What sounds would it make?
  • What would it smell or taste like?
  • What memories or feelings come up when you’re in it?
  • What might it be trying to tell you?

Because so often, when we look at clutter, we go straight to logic. It’s all systems, bins, strategies, and “shoulds.” But clutter isn’t just logical. It’s emotional. It’s sensory. It speaks in feelings.

And when we sit down and listen, it tells us something beautiful

When Tricia shared what she discovered, we were all speechless.

Her Room of Doom, a spare bedroom layered with boxes and half-finished projects, had the faint scent of essential oils mingling with a trace of mustiness. It felt alive with memory. It held the laughter and tears of past chapters, reminding her of her childhood craft room, a place where creativity and chaos coexisted beautifully.

And when she finally listened, this is what her room whispered back:

“I’m you. Chaotic, curious, multi-layered, real. Please care for me and love me. I’m not an outcast—and neither are you. We are needed, wanted, and loved.”

That’s the power of seeing clutter differently. When we stop seeing our messy spaces as evidence that something’s wrong with us, and start seeing them as reflections of what’s real, everything shifts.

Your Room of Doom might not be so scary after all. It might just feel like coming home to yourself.

So, tell me…

If your clutter could talk, what do you think it might say?

Comment below and tell me. I would love to hear.

If you’re ready to hear what your own Room of Doom has to say, and turn your clutter into a source of clarity and care, come join us in the Chaos to Calm Organizing Community. You’ll be amazed at what happens when you start listening instead of judging. 💛
