You know that little mystery object you’ve been holding onto?
Maybe it’s a tiny screw.
A curved plastic thing that clearly belongs to something.
A piece of rubber, or a metal part that looks important but… you’ve got no idea why.
You found it while organizing and thought:
“This has to go to something…”
So you kept it.
And now it’s floating around in a drawer, on the counter, or in a random Ziploc bag—still waiting to make sense.
I call these things Little Loose Ends—and I’ve found they stop a lot of people in their tracks when they’re trying to get organized.
So, I created a simple solution:
The Question Mark Box
Literally a box labeled with a “?” on all four sides.
You can put anything in there that you know is important, but you’re not sure what it belongs to (yet). It gives those odd little items a safe place to live while allowing you to keep moving forward.
Why does this matter?
Because when you’re organizing, those “I don’t know what this is” moments can feel like failure.
Especially if you’re overwhelmed, neurodivergent, or just someone who’s tired of guessing.
You don’t want to throw it away (you know you’ll need it the second you do). But you also don’t want it floating around making your space feel messy.
So it ends up in limbo… again.
The Question Mark Box gives you a system—and peace of mind.
You don’t have to decide right now.
You don’t have to lose sleep or add it to the junk drawer pile.
You just put it in the Question Mark box and keep going.
Here’s the best part…
One of my clients, Jasmine, called me recently—so excited.
She just realized that one of her “question mark box” items was the exact missing piece to her electric blinds.
She had been trying to fix her blinds for months. And that one little plastic thing in her question mark box was the solution! It finally made sense.
Because she listened to her instincts and trusted herself to hold onto something seemly random, she was able to fix something important in her life.
So, if you’ve been feeling bad about keeping “random little things,” I want you to know:
You’re not wrong.
You’re not disorganized.
You’re just someone who hasn’t made the connection…yet.
Make a box. Label it with a big question mark.
And when you figure it out later (and you will)—it’ll feel like magic.
Here’s to you trusting your intuition!
