3 Easy Organizing Tips You Can Implement Today. Getting organized is one of the most challenging obstacles we face every day. But the good news is that you already have a ton of practice because you are organizing all the time. Often starting just about any task at work or at home requires some organizational pre-work. Before beginning a project at work you may have to first clear your head, prepare files, collect and sort through data, and later present the finished product or report in an organized fashion. At home, don’t you clear up your kitchen and prep raw food items before you start cooking?
Moreover, if you really think about it, you are a pro at organizing. The tricky part is applying those skills to undesirable areas in your home that require decluttering. Fear not; I have a solution, or two or three. Read on for three tips that you can easily put into practice when organizing your home.
Tip 1–Start Somewhere, Anywhere
The art is truly in the start. Many of my clients tell me that the hardest part when it comes to getting organized is finding the right time and place to start. I totally get it. Know that there is no perfect time to declutter and get your home organized. The best time to start is today! Right now. Well, maybe after you read this blog post.
So, I’ve found that small projects can yield big results. We all have that dreaded junk drawer in the kitchen. Well, why not start there? Another great place to start organizing is your mail nook. How about your desk? Your coat closet? You get the idea. Pick a corner and begin. You’ll find that by breaking larger projects or rooms into smaller sections, you can easily get organized–one drawer, one shelf and one room at a time.
Tip 2–Set a Timer and GO!
Did you know? You can begin to declutter your home in as little as 30 minutes. It’s true! First thing’s first, start with Tip 1. Pick a spot, hunker down and set a timer. Once the timer goes off, you’re done! However, be prepared to be very satisfied with yourself–and motivated. Clearing just one drawer or shelf at a time is just the tip of the iceberg. After you get over the hump of getting started, organizing your home can become a highly addictive habit.
Tip 3–Declutter on the Daily
I’m here to tell you that it’s completely possible to make getting organized a daily to-do. Ah, yes, something easy to check off your to-do list. I promise you it’s super simple–and you don’t have to give up an entire day or weekend to get your home organized.
Here are 3 quick and easy exercises to help you declutter your home a little bit each day:
- Clean up your pantry in between waiting for water to boil or chicken to bake
- Sort through the mail, fold laundry or clean out a drawer during TV commercial breaks
- Anytime you have a spare moment (maybe when you’re waiting in line at Costco, or at the doctor’s office) take the opportunity to delete old voicemails, texts and undesired pics on your phone.
Easy peasy. If you can just bring these 3 key organizing tips to mind whenever you face an ugly corner of clutter, you’ll be a step ahead when it comes to getting organized–and fast!
