Great thoughts and advice! I too carried around so many books through so many moves. I had an epiphany one day when I realized it would be ok to let some of the books go because they were outdated. Those books were some of my college text books and they represented a very important time frame to me. I was proud to see them on my bookshelf as they represented a time in my life when I chose to go to college and finish my degree. I was thirsty for knowledge and I was thirsty to move up the ladder in my career. Years later I donated the books and it felt good to "lose the weight" while knowing that I was ready to move on. Now I read for pleasure and I completely understand what you mean by surrounding yourself with books and what that can share with people. So many great conversations have begun when someone looks at my books, especially if we've read the same one.
